Brief resume for the season

Pretty close to 40 players have represented the club this season and once the final match is played on 25th April we will have fulfilled 50 fixtures.

The first team had a great first half but have been hit hard by the loss of their number one Martin McInroy to injury (broken leg) for the second half. The final game at home to Ebbisham on 25th April will decide whether they are relegated (support very much welcomed).

The second team have done wonderfully well this season. Seeded 7 in Div 4 they have won 10 games out of 14 including doing the double over the league champions but missed out on promotion.

The third and fourth teams were run as 2 roughly equal strength squads in Div 5 and finished a creditable 4th and 5th out of 7 teams. The Fourth team finished 6 points ahead of the thirds (mainly because the 4ths received 2 walk-overs) but in the games that really mattered (ie the ‘grudge matches’ between the two sides) the thirds prevailed both times in close (enjoyable) battles!

Report

Saturday saw the 14th Surrey Youth Games, which this year was held at the new Surrey Sports Park in Guildford. Reigate & Banstead sent a junior squash team of eight youngsters to take part in the junior squash tournament.

Matches consist of five players from each team in a table of four playing each other. The matches are played over three games, the results being either 2-1 or 3-0. Table B consisted of Reigate & Banstead, Epsom & Ewell, Elmbridge and Spelthorn Team 2.

In the first match the juniors faced Elmbridge. All five R & B players won their matches 3-0, making a perfect score of 15.

The next match was against Spelthorn's second team, once again all five R & B players won 3-0. This gave the Borough a score of 30/30. Lastly R & B played Epsom & Ewell. Again all the players won their games 3-0, giving R & B an impressive score of 45/45.

In the semi-final R & B were up against the Spelthorn first team, who came second in Table A. Once again the R & B players won all five matches 3-0, this put the R & B team into the final where they were to face Mole Valley.

After some very good matches the R & B team were victorious, losing only one game throughout the whole day. The final score was 14-1 to Reigate & Banstead. This is the fourth year that the R & B junior squash team have won gold at the Youth Games. All players took home a shiny gold medal and the trophy will spend time with all eight players who took part in a day of great squash and sportsmanship.

All of the players trained at Reigate Squash Club in Manor Road under the expert coaching of Head Coach Alison Malynn. Alison was assisted in her coaching by some of Reigate's older Junior players, Jonathan Malynn, Mike Pinggera, Alex Fredericks, Alex Phillips & Lilly Pinggera. Alison's father Arthur Cumings also played a part in the coaching and was the Borough's Official Photographer for the Surrey Youth Games weekend. Special mention should also go to Alison Malynn, Jonathan Malynn, Lilly Pinggera & Simon Fredericks for volunteering to mark matches at the Games.

New, improved facilities at the Manor Road club have just been completed and it is hoped that the club will go from strength to strength. Reigate Squash Club now have an online booking system, new changing facillities for ladies and has had all four courts refurbished.

The junior team that won gold are - Ted English, Annabel Fredericks, Niamh Brown, Connor McNeil, George Kernick, Holly Dowling, James Dunning & Georgia McKenzie.

Team etiquette whilst representing the Club

Below are some notes which define the Squash Club Committee’s expectations relating to the manner in which the various squash teams represent the club.

Summary

The Club pay a rather large affiliation fee to England Squash so that they can then enter teams into the Surrey leagues. This takes the form of a rate per member so the more members we have in the club the more we need to pay regardless of the number of teams that we field. On top of this the club also provides free courts and free balls to all teams for their matches. To acknowledge this the committee feel that it should be represented appropriately by all of its teams.

The presence of our teams should be viewed as an advertisement for potential members of team playing ability to join our club. Unsociable behaviour will not entice others to want to join. With this in mind please act on the following.

  • 1.0 Punctuality
  • 1.1 The start time for home matches is 19:30. Although there is a tendency for some opposing teams to arrive late RSC Teams should have players available for greeting opponents at the designated start time, upon which an order of play can be agreed and apologies made for any known late comers.
  • 1.2 Teams should then aim to get the first matches on court as soon as possible and ensure that there are sufficient players available, shortly thereafter, for marking the first games.
No-one likes being asked to mark matches whilst playing away so why should we expect our visitors to mark at our club, unless otherwise agreed.
  • 1.3 Starting the match on time will result in an early finish and a sensible hour for all to leave the club.

  • 2.0 Bar, barman and entertaining the opposition
  • 2.1 Since Brian Hart took over the running of the bar the issue of volunteer bar staff not attending the club to run the bar for match nights has gone away, with the odd exception. The problem that we are now faced with is that the volunteer bar staff are becoming more and more reluctant to man the bar on the nights of men’s matches for various reasons. With this in mind please act on the following.

    1. Consider the bar person if the match is running late. General closing time for the bar is deemed to be 10:30 / 10:45pm. Starting the match on time means that the bar person can leave at this reasonable hour. Alternatively make sure that the bar person is able to stay late.
    2. If the evening is running late ask your opponents if they would like one last drink before the bar closes.
    3. Offer the bar person a drink on the slate and / or a bite to eat during the winter leagues (if there is enough food).
    4. Most importantly make the bar person feel that they are part of the team and not just some-one serving drinks.
  • 2.2 Ensure that the away team are suitably entertained by a reasonable number of home players and not left on their own during the meal / drinks after the match.

  • 3.0 Kitchen
  • 3.1 There has recently been a new kitchen fitted at the club, which needs looking after. At the end of the night please:

    1. Ensure that the kitchen is left in a decent state, i.e. clean and tidy.
    2. Ensure that the bins have been emptied into the skip located under Court D
    3. Ensure that the dishwasher is put on so that the cleaned dishes can be unloaded by the next people who want to use it.
    4. Should any supplies, such as washing up liquid or dishwasher tablets, be running short, please leave a note behind the bar.

  • 4.0 Re-arranging matches
  • 4.1 Re-arranging matches after short-term cancellations will not be tolerated as it does not allow the club to release the courts in time to be fully utilised by paying members. Short term should be viewed as anything within 2 to 3 days. Any team wanting to cancel a match at short notice should be informed of the Club’s reluctance to re-arrange the match.
  • 4.2 If it is agreed that the matches are to be re-arranged then please inform Mike Campion, who manages the court booking folder.
  • 4.3 If a home match is cancelled due to it having to be re-arranged then ensure that the courts are released in the book so that they can be used by paying members.
  • 4.4 Under absolutely no circumstance should a match be re-arranged to a Tuesday as this clashes with Club night. Preference is to keep re-arranged men’s matches to Wednesdays or Thursdays. If wanting to enquire about court availability then contact myself or Mike Campion.

  • General

  • If the committee’s reasonable requests are not met then the future of that particular team will have to be reviewed.
