Junior tradition now continuing at Reigate Squash Club

Reigate Squash Club always welcomes junior members and has a history of player development to the highest standard, over the years bringing on players to County, Regional, National and International level. September saw the start of the season for RSC Junior Coaching under the guidance of Reigate's own Alison Cumings, herself a former Reigate Junior player who went on, as an adult, to become World No. 4 and British Champion. The coaching sessions, as well as junior leagues, have been particularly well attended and the club now boasts 10 boys and 10 girls under 14. Great progress has been made across the board. During this time top girl Jennifer Austin led a team of 4 to victory over Woldingham Girls School and Jonathan Malynn, Simon Rivers and new member Oliver Rammage gave a good account of themselves at last week's Ebbisham Open, with Jonathan winning the E grade tournament. This Saturday, 4th December, saw all the hard work pay off, with an internal team competition amongst the juniors at Manor Road. The RSC tournament was headed by their top two players (both in Surrey Boys Squad), Simon Rivers and Jonathan Malynn. All 18 Under 14 members, who regularly attend the coaching at RSC, played two rounds of squash in 2 teams. The result of an afternoon of close fought and enthralling squash was that Jonathan's team came out the victors, with the real winner being the club itself. Each player received a medal and special awards were presented to Rebecca Malynn, Alice Day and Jonathan Malynn for Fitness, Rohan Soni and Declan Fields Improvers B, Clare Wright and Oliver Ramagge Improvers A and Gus Meyer for Personality. Simon Rivers and Jennifer Austin were presented with an award for having made the most progress overall since April. The awards were presented by Club Chairman Nick Bate. Some of the top players now move on to take part in the upcoming Surrey Squash trials and Surrey Junior Open Tournament at St George's Weybridge. A friendly match will take place against Ebbisham before Christmas and training will resume in January. Meanwhile the Under 19 Team continues its run of success in Surrey Junior Division 1. Club Secretary, Helen Dredge, is working closely with coach Alison Cumings and England Squash Regional Development Officer, Nick Metcalf to obtain the England Squash Charter, the newly introduced seal of approval for Junior Activities and it is hoped that this will be in place early in the New Year. Any young people interested in getting fit and enjoying the challenge of competitive sport in a highly social environment, just drop in at the club in Manor Road or contact us through the website at www.reigatesquash.co.uk
